Original Imperial Japanese WWII Navy Fencing Helmet
An original Imperial Japanese Navy fencing helmet dating to the Second World War period, constructed in the traditional kendo style and associated with wartime martial training within the Imperial Japanese naval system. The helmet retains a handwritten cloth label appearing to serve as an identification tag, possibly bearing the surname “Matsuda.”
Protective equipment of this type was utilized during kendo instruction and physical conditioning exercises intended to develop discipline, reflexes, and combat readiness among naval personnel. The Imperial Japanese military continued to incorporate traditional martial arts training throughout the wartime years, with surviving training equipment offering insight into both military culture and daily instruction practices.
Named or identified examples are of particular interest to collectors and researchers due to the potential for further study and attribution. The helmet also presents well as a display piece within Imperial Japanese militaria or martial arts collections.
